Solar One, a renewable energy advocacy non-profit, wanted to encourage more New Yorkers to support solar energy policy at the state level. I was hired to work with the I Heart PV campaign. (PV=photovoltaic) I developed a system to connect with the public, quickly explain the importance of solar energy, and help people get in touch with their representatives to support several pro-solar bills. The mobile units attracted onlookers by offering free mobile phone charging, playing solar powered music, and showing solar presentations on laptops. The chargers were designed to be easily assembled from low cost, mostly reclaimed materials. I worked with Solar One’s high school intern group to construct the chargers and then take them out in public. The two bills we advocated for passed, hopefully in part because of the campaign. |

Students assemble the solar mobile units. The mobile units are easily transported to locations of heavy foot traffic. Students use the mobile chargers as teaching stations.
